It seems like silicone bracelets are all around Perth and just everywhere. In 2003, silicone bracelets were inexpensive “jewelry” that kids and teenagers wore. They were inexpensive and came in bright colours. They were a natural for children who didn’t have a lot of money but wanted something that looked “cool” to put on their arms.
In 2004, though, everything would change. Lance Armstrong, a cancer survivor and then champion bicycle racer, would team up with Nike to promote his charity called “Livestrong.” They sold silicone bracelets for $1 to raise awareness for cancer and to raise money for the charity. Amazingly, they would sell 25 million of the bracelets within the first six months.
Even though Armstrong would later be discredited, Livestrong has still sold over 80 million of their bracelets worldwide. Other charities noticed the success of Livestrong and many immediately created their own bracelets. Ten years later, they are still one of the most effective ways to promote a charity or a cause.
So Why are They so Successful?
Inexpensive
Silicone bracelets are very inexpensive. They can be sold for a very low donation to any cause and still turn a profit. They can also be used to publicise a for-profit company and produce a lot of advertising impressions without a high overhead.
Highly Visible
Silicone bracelets are made in bright colours. Those same colours that children and teenagers used to like so much before 2004 are still there. If your charity, cause or brand is on a brightly-coloured silicone bracelet, it is definitely going to be seen. This has two great effects. For the charity or cause, it generates publicity. For those who are wearing the bracelets, it identifies them as people who contributed to the cause. Everybody wins.
Easy to Transport
Hundreds of silicone bracelets can be moved at a time in a relatively small box. This comes in handy for public events.
