Printed mugs for coffee have come a long way since we started creating promotional products in Perth. Thirty years ago, a custom printed coffee mug could have your company name and a simple logo on it. That is because the design was printed as a coating on top of the cup. It severely limited what we could do with a coffee cup or a mug.
Sublimation: Modern Technology at its Finest
Today, we use a process called “sublimation.” Sublimation uses special “sublimation dyes” that are absorbed into the the item’s surface instead of on top of it. The most reliable surface for sublimation is white, because the background can affect the colour of the dye.
Sublimation dyes are put into a sublimation printer. This is used to print any design you want onto dye sub transfer paper. The dye is heat reactive. This means that heat can be used to transfer the dye into whatever surface you like. The mug has to be made of polymer or polyester. It can also have a polymer coating. These have pores that can accept the dye transfer. Standard materials don’t have “pores” and can’t accept the dye transfer.
The dye transfer paper is put around the mug and the mug is heated close to 200 degrees for a period of somewhere around 15 seconds. The mug is then cooled in water to keep the dyes from blurring.
The Result
The result is the design you want, printed into the surface of your coffee mug. You can not only use your company name and logo, but any picture you want, too. This means that we can put nearly anything you can imagine on your coffee mug. If you can make a picture out of it, we can make a custom printed coffee mug out of it.
